It is an emblematic destination during the Patron Saint Festivities which are held in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua on 15th August.D. Lope de Valenzuela, who with a statue of the Virgen with baby Jesus in her arms, named her Patron of Almuñecar in memory of the defeat of the Moorish troups. On August 15th the Virgen is paraded and her image is taken out to sea from the beach of San Cristobal and brought back to shore at the Paseo, her voyage out to the Peñones marks the beginning of the renowned firework display. Within the Castle walls you can find a variety of remains which give you a global vision of Almuñecar´s eventful past and you can see, without excavations, truly interesting Arabic remains.
